2019 Scholarship Winners

Because of your support of our annual golf outing and the commitments by the Arnson, Pedler, Bailey families, Spartan Fund and the MSU Alumni Club of Muskegon Lakeshore Area we are please to award these students with scholarships for 2019. We are proud to announce that the scholarships monies awarded are over $20,000!

ARNSON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP – $15,000
MADELINE ECKERMAN is a graduate of Mona Shores High School and has been accepted into Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State. Lyman Briggs is a residential college which bridges science and humanities through interdisciplinary teaching and research. Maddy will study Biology in hopes of becoming a Pediatrician. She played Soccer for (4) years, and was Captain of the Varsity team. She was also an active participant in Rotary International’s Interact Club, developing leadership skills and discovering the power of putting Community Service above Self Service. Continuing Maddy’s theme of giving back, she was a Student Body Representative in MIBLSI, a program which helps students succeed by introducing behavioral incentives to encourage learning.

DRIVER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP – $12,000
HAILEY LIVERANCE graduated Summa Cum Laude from North Muskegon High School. In addition – as a Muskegon Community College Promise Scholar – she will have earned 62 MCC credits prior to entering MSU this fall, and she has earned a place on the MCC President’s List by achieving a 4.0 grade point average. At MCC, Hailey was also PR and Historian for MCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, focusing on Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. At North Muskegon, Hailey was President of Interact and a member of the National Honor Society. Hailey will be a Political Science major at MSU, leading to a Post Graduate Program and ultimately a career as a successful civil servant. She hopes to be a voice for her constituents, to advocate for the unheard, and to strive for a nation in which the quality of life for all citizen is safe and prosperous.

MERRILL and ZONA BAILEY FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP – $2,500
CHRISTINA HOUSE is one of 5 Valedictorians to grduate from Ravenna High School. In Band, she was the Financial Officer and played Trombone. She was active in Student Council, holding offices of Class Rep, Treasurer, and Executive Treasurer. Additionally, Christina participated in FFA, receiving 9 awards for Academics, Service, and Leadership. She is also a volunteer at Noah Project No-Kill Animal Shelter. She enters MSU to study Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, intending to add Post-Graduate studies and pursue a career in Biomedical Research. Her ultimate goal is to help people and make the world a better place by curing the worst diseases. A recent trip to Europe broadened her perspective of humanity, and taught her that there are more similarities than differences between us. She is excited to amplify this new awareness at MSU!

JIM and JERI PEDLER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP – $2,500
TORIONA DAY lives in Muskegon Heights and is a graduate from Muskegon High School. She will major in Biology and Pre-Med at MSU. At Muskegon High School, her extracurricular activities included Theater, Upward Bound, National Honor Society, President and Mentor of Masque Club, GSA, Muskegon Underclassmen Advocates, and Rotary Interact. Her volunteer activities, which spanned 3 years, encompassed Big Brothers, Big Sisters, March of Dimes, local Soup Kitchens, Alzheimer’s Walks, Wings of Mercy, and Golden Years Malamute Rescue. She is a Crew Member at Papa Murphy’s, and swears by the Chicken Bacon Artichoke Pizza! Tori is passionate about growth, educations, and being her authentic self. She is enthusiastically looking forward to befriending like-minded colleagues at Michigan State University this fall.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR MUSKEGON COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP – $2,000
BAILEY WALKER is another of the 5 Valedictorians who graduated from Ravenna High School this year! In addition, she is dual enrolled at MCC and has earned Elanco’s Veterinary Medical Application Certification. At Ravenna, she was Captain of the Baskeball Team and Goal Keeper for the Soccer Team. Her Community Volunteer Hours number over 100. She has been a ‘State of Michigan’ 2 year qualifier with Business Professionals of America. Bailey also participated in Future Farmers of America for 4 years, serving as both Chapter Treasurer, and later, as Regional Secretary. She credits Melanie Block, her FFA Advisor & Agri-Science Teach (incidentally, named 1 of 6 Outstanding Agricultural Education Teachers in the nation) with inspiring her to ‘Go For It’ and follow her dreams, starting with completing MSU’s Pre-Veterinary Program, then, graduating from MSU’s Veterinary School, and ultimately, pursuing a career as a Small Animal Vet.

MSU ALUMNI CLUB OF THE MUSKEGON LAKESHORE AREA BOOK SCHOLARSHIP – $1,000
AARON FOSTER graduated from Reeths Puffer High School. At Reeths Puffer, he was a member of National Honor Society, Theater, and Straight Talk About Tough Stuff, where he was able to reach out to Middle Schoolers with a powerful message that it’s OK to abstain from drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and sex. His passion to be a positive role model also led to experiences including; Counselor at Camp-Break-A-Leg, Youth Mentor at HealthWest, and Company Manager and school Liaison for Reeths Puffer Children’s Theatre. A Healthcare Internship at North Ottawa Community Hospital sparked Aaron’s interest in Nursing, which will be his major at MSU. As a nurse, Aaron looks forward to forming bonds with colleagues in the medical field and working one-on-one with patients to provide quality care that makes a favorable impact on their lives.
